Subject: A few questions about pharmacies.

Question
I have a few questions for you please. I have recently been in a bad car accident. Luckily I have blue cross blue shield. When it comes to getting my prescriptions, some pharmacies(or pharmacists whjo are independent refuse to use my insurance. They claim that they lose money when using insurance co pays( even though the signs all over say we accept all insurance) is it possible because they own the place and see me driving a bmw they think I can afford to pay it so i will becuase they are very expensive generics which should cost me only 10 but end up costing me 50+ each!
thanks in advance. also im just curious but most pharmacies refuse to even fill my hydrocodone prescription so sometimes i must go in pain until i find a pharmacy that will, why is this and is it legal to refuse to fill it? they claim it is controleld and dont want to bother with it.

Answer
Hi,
Pharmacists have the right to refuse to fill prescription for legitimate reasons. Having a third party insurance is not a legitimate reason to refuse to fill a prescription. I can not speak for the individual pharmacists you have dealt with. I would refuse to fill a prescription if I suspect misuse of the prescription. For example: suspicion would be raised if you see more than one doctor for the same prescription or prescriptions of potential abuse, also if you have prescriptions for unusual high quantities, or if you have them filled more frequently than appears you should based on the quantity and instructions. If you do not fit into any of these categories than you shouls seek the advice of the pharmacy regulatory body of your state or province.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
