About Nigel Simmons
Expertise I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised.
Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner.
I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question.
Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Subject: marijuana and lopressor
Question I'm a 25 yr old fairly overweight male and I recently went to my family Dr. about some chest pains and fluttery heartrate. He prescribed Lopressor or Metoprolol for this. I am a daily cannabis smoker (maybe .5g a day not much) which raises my heartrate. Is it ok to continue to smoke while taking this medicine which evidently slows the heartrate? Thanks in advance.
Answer Chris
I don't know if your doctor was aware of your marijuana use, because I suspect this is likely to be the cause of the abnormal heart rhythmn. If he is not aware, then it is in your best interests to tell him as it could affect how your problems are managed over the long term.
As a possibly illegal product, I cannot professionally recommend use of drugs such as marijuana, and as it has side effect on heart rhythmn, I certainly would not support its use even under the protection of a beta-blocker such as metoprolol.
I hope this helps.
