Subject: metoprolol L and Levothyroxine sodium

Question
Iam newly diagnosed with hypothyroidism. TSH 8. I was put on Synthroid 0.075. Six weeks later TSH was so low it didn't register a number. The doctor lowered the dose to Eltroxin o.05.  Two weeks later I went into a highly agitated state with erratic heart involvement, tachycardia, fast pulse, high anxiety and a "buzzing in my body". Thought unfocused and fearful.   I was on Metoprolol L 25mg this whole time too.Was this a drug interaction?I still haven't got my latest TSH result. I have completely stopped the Eltroxin as the symptoms are intolerable

Answer
Dear Susan

Eltroxin can certainly cause these effects and I would not think it was a drug interaction rather it being a direct action. If anything metoprolol would negate these effects rather than cause them directly or by an interaction. Eltroxin and Synthroid will suppress TSH production so am not surprised by your lab results and would agree with your doctor's action but you may still need a lower dose ie the lowest available 25mcg (O,025mg).

Regards

Dr Alan Galbraith
