Question
Hi, My 1 yr old had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin 8 days after she was on it. The dr had her on Prednisone for 4 days and it stopped the reaction and cleared it up but not all the way. She still has a rash that is lingering it still flares up every now and then and looks like it did when she had the reaction. I was sent to a dermatologist and he said that it is ecxema but I still think the drugs are just lingering in her body. My question is how long before the amoxicillin is out of the body completely? And can the amox cause excema if it is indeed excema? How long will she have that? It has already been 3 weeks. She has it covering her entire body and I think it could be mistaken for excema but again I think it is still the after effects of the amoxicillan. Thank you for your time and expertise.

Answer
Hi Stephanie,
I am sorry to hear about your child's problem. Now let me clear your doubts.
Amoxicillin has a half life of 60 min, this means that every 60 min the concentration of amoxicllin will halve. The usual peak concentratin following a dose is around 20 mcg/ml, this means that by the end of the day 1 the concentration would drop to 0.000001 mcg. This concentration is neither measureable nor has an biological effect. By 8 days the concentration is so low that there may not be molecule left in the body.
However allergic reactions are not related to the concentration and allergic reactions may continue way after drug has left the body.
Amoxicillin does not cause ezema and I would not consider that possibility. I would suggest you take the advice of the dermatologist for the treatment of ezema.
