Subject: amiloride- BIDURET L

Question
My relative was on tenormin-100 HCT 25 Amlodipine-10 Losartan 100. As his bp reading was barderline high, dr started BIDURET-L ( Amelioride-2.5+HCT-25) What is the difference when HCT 25 taken alone and when taken in combination with HCT 25. Can you please explain to a layman.

Answer
Hi Deepak,
The difference is in the loss of potassium from the body. HCT causes potassium loss and amiloride reduces potassium loss. When used together potassium balance is maintained. This does not happen when HCT is uused alone, it may cause severe potassium loss. But I do hope HCT alone has been stopped.
