Subject: propranolol and increase of blood sugar

Question
sir, I have read in internet that propranolol -beta blocker can raise blood sugar even than calciam chanel blocker..is it true?

Answer
Propranolol is more often thought to mask the symptoms of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar in diabetic patients.  There have been a few isolated cases of patients taking propanolol and other beta blockers who have had unpredictable increases in blood sugar that may or may not have been due to the propranolol.  It is recommended that patients taking propranolol or other beta blockers monitor their blood glucose to make sure they are not having variations too high or too low.  Calcium channel blockers seem to have no specific effect on blood sugar readings.

Thanks
