Question I have been taking Lyrica for Fibromyalgia Syndrome, and I have consistently Gained weight since I started the medication.
My question is, Can I take Phentermine or any other Appetite suppresant with the Lyrica. The Lyrica makes me feel hungry all the time. I am constantly starving (or at least that is how it feels)
Thanks
Answer Hi Lesley,
Weight gain occurs is about 10% of patients taking Lyrica. Although it may cause fluid retention, most likely your weight gain is due to an increase in appetite.
It must be a horrible feeling to be hungry all the time! As far as the phentermine goes, I am really not a fan. It can only be used for a few weeks at a time and in the end, has minimal effects on weight loss. What is better for your health is to exercise more, and try eating larger portions of fruits and veggies and smaller portions of carbohydrates. When you do eat carbs, go for the whole wheat kind. Also watch your sodium intake which causes fluid retention and weight gain as well. I do realize you are being treated for FM and you are most likely sore, a good amount of the time. But, a good exercise routine will help you feel better and hopefully lose weight if you need to.
A good tip I heard from a friend who was trying to lose weight was to drink lots of water--it makes you feel full.
I wish you the best. Take care and good luck!
Regards,
Dr. Tara, Pharm.D.
