Question

On 7/30/2007 someone asked about slitting a proscar tab for financial reasons.  Your answer was ok, if precations were taken, but splitting into 1 mg dose may not be doable.

My Question: what amount of Saw Palmetto would it take to equal 1 mg of proscar (finasteride)?  Don't they both have a 5α – reductase enzyme action?

And lastly: How volatile is proscar.  Could a tab be dissolved and then divided into five portions?

John

Answer
Hi John,
There is easy direct conversion from Proscar to Saw Palmetto. Start with the dose recommended on the bottle and see if it is effective enough for you.
Proscar is not volatile but it is unknown how stable it is in solution.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
