Question
I have a quick question...I was diagnosed with strep throat on sunday and was given an injection and some medication (AMOX TR-K CLV). That was in the morning and by midnight it had gotten worst, I could not breath so I went to the emergency room. There they put me on an IV with steroids and they in turn prescribed me some more antibiotics (Clindamycin hcl). Which medication is better? The symptons have not been getting all that better and I just want to make sure I take the right medication. I have had this issue for about 4 days now.

Answer
Hi Edgar,
I think what you receved initially ws amoxy CLAV and subsequently you have been put on Clindamycin. Both these drugs work on majority of the strains of strep. However what has happened is that the number of injections of amoxy that you were given were inadequate. The drug needs to be administered three times a day while it has been given only once so obviously it would not work. Now that you are given a regular dose of Clinda you should improve. However total eradication of infection genrally takes bout five days. So you will have to wait for that much time before you can see good improvement.
