Question This problem causes me to wake up several times per night. A dental hygienist has suggested that I coat the roof of my mouth with petroleum jelly. Is that a safe practice? Can you offer any other suggestions? Thank you for your generous help.
Answer Dear Jack
It could well work but would not be very pleasant. It is fairly inert so should not cause any problem. This problem is usually caused by too much mouth breathing often due to nasal congestion. Decongestant nasal sprays could help here but should not be used continuously for more than 2 weeks.
In Australia salava replacement sprays and mouth gels are available for this problem but do not know the availability in other countries. I do know the mouth gels are made in Japan.
