Question
My doctor just prescribed Nifedical for my high blood pressure.  The BP is fine but my ankles and calves are very swollen, red, and hot.  Is this a normal side effect for this drug?

Answer
Hi Nancy,
Nifedical is nifedipine, a calcium channel antagonist for the treatment of blood pressure and angina pectoris. swelling of the ankles or feet is a well known reaction of this drug. There is nothing to worry about it, but if this is troubling you talk to your doctor, and get an alternative drug. There are many alternatives for you, but avoid amlodipine too, since that drug will  probably cause similar side effects.
