Pharmacy - Tramadol

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 10/26/2009

Question
I have been on tramadol (100mg 4 times a day) for just over 30 months. This is due to massive amounts of pain in my back after a fall. I am also on diazepam and parasetamol.

My question for you is: My doctor doesn't believe that that it is addictive and he thinks that will be no side effects if i come off it in one step. This seems outrages to me as I have looked in to it and there are hundreds of people on line who say other wise. I know that there is a long lasting version of tramadol that only has to be taken once a day but I have no idea what it is called.

Please could you give me any advice you can. after all he is the one that can stop the prescriptions.

Thank you for your time.

Jonny

Answer
Hi Jonny,
There is little doubt that after 30 months of use of tramadol, your body will not have withdrawal. When you decide that you need to reduce the dose, change the schedule to three times a day and later to twice and then to once. Do this tapering over a period of one to two weeks at every step down. This will reduce yor side effects and withdrawal effects.
The 'long lasting' version is called Ultram ER and is available in doses of 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg. Please check with yor pharmacist, which is available in UK. Personally I do not think that the long lasting version is any safer than the regular one.
