Pharmacy - Cutivate Cream

Expert: Mary E Scott, RPh, CGP - 11/5/2009

Question
My dr prescribed cutivate, my 5 month old sons back is full of dry skin so I
rubbbed the cutivate cream all over his back then I did a search on the cutivate
and it said do not apply the cutivate in large areas because it is absorbed into
the bloodstream and there could be serious health affects. Immediately after
reading this I took baby wipes and tried to wipe some off. Just worried he might
of gotten too much. I applied the same amount about a week ago not knowing I was
only supposed to apply in small patches

Answer
Hi,Jenn,
Cutivate cream can be absorbed through the skin and affect the pituitary system if used on large areas of the body and for a long period of time, especially in pediatric patients. If you are not using it daily for a long time, it shouldn't affect him. It is a pretty strong steroid cream to use in a 5 month old, though. Sometimes, doctors will prescribe a compounded cream with half Cutivate and half Eucerin (dry skin cream). That way, it is not as strong but still works. Maybe you can mention that to his doctor if he is going to need this for awhile. Hope this helps, Mary
