Pharmacy - Oral use of Protopic

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 11/1/2009

Question
I have been precribed protopic to treat oral lichen planus. The instructions with the ointment are very specific about not been used in the mouth. Is it safe to use for my condition. I currently use betamethasone as a mouthwash.

Many thanks

Answer
Trevor,
We do not use ointments in the mouth because the excipients used are not meant for oral consumption. The drug is safe, but becuae of the excipients the formulation is not recommended for oral or ophthalmic use. I would go back to the doctor and ask him, becuase of my worry about the efficacy of the drug using this dosage form.
