Pharmacy - false positive urine test
Expert: Dr Alan Galbraith - 11/13/2009
Question I recently was denied a 2nd job due to a false pos urine test for amphetamines. I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer in May/09 and underwent 25 radioactive external beam treatments in Sept/09 and had a 96 plutonium radioactive seeds implantation in the prostate on 10/14/09 and just had my 2nd Trelstar LA 11.25mg hormone shot 2 weeks ago (I'm getting 3 total shots 12 weeks apart to keep my testosterone levels low). I also was taking Flomax from 9/01/09 untill 11/6/09 and then switched to Terazosin 4 mg/day on 11/7/09 and am on OTC ranitidine 150mg bid, Ibuprofen 800mg bid and multi vitamin, and glucosimine-MSN 1500 mg/day...My question is can any of this contribute to a false positive urine test for amphetimines??? My career and integrity are at stake here. Thank you in advance for any help you can give....Terry
Answer Dear Terry
None of these drugs are remotely related to amphetamines. Unfortunately, urine tests (and some blood tests) throw up many false positives. All the pharmacy panel on this site get frequent questions on these false positives for every abusable drug under the sun. I have also corresponded with physicians in the US about this and are convinced that many of these laboratories turn out false positives at a drop of a hat. There is something seriously wrong with this so called democratic system that innocent people are being branded drug abusers/users/addicts etc. All I can say is that you demand a repeat test with a second sealed sample given to you for subsequent analysis if a false positive is detected. Also, it is time the citizens of the US start to seriously and legally question these tests. I think all on this part of allexperts get several similar questions weekly. As Shakespeare said "There is something rotten about the state of Denmark". This problem certainly does not arise in Europe or Australia where I live. It seems that one is guilty until proven innocent but one does not easily get to prove this.

PS Do you find terazozin better than the tamulosin? I am very interested to know.
