Pharmacy - Can I drink while taking Augmentin?

Expert: Barbara Judge - 2/21/2009

Question
Can I have alcoholic beverages while taking Augmentin? I am also taking Hydrocodone and alprazolam for pain and anxiety.
I had a root canal on Monday...

Answer
If you were only taking Augmentin it would be OK to drink small amounts of alcoholic beverages, like 1 drink per day.  You should not drink alcohol while taking hydrocodone or alprazolam since it can intensify the side effects of each medication separately, let alone when you are taking both medications together.  You also need to give yourself time to heal from the root canal before you consider alcohol use.  Alcohol can be a blood thinner for some people and may slow healing.  All in all it would be in your best interests not to drink alcohol at this time.

Thanks
