Pharmacy - paxil & cold medicines

Expert: Barbara Judge - 2/25/2009

Question
I am taking thyroid for hypothyroid and Paxil for menopause problems. I had a cold last week and I took Nyquil at night. My doctor didnt say anything about what not to take with Paxil so I took it. The only thing is the next day I felt shaky and like I eas floating on a cloud...kinda like a space cadet.

and extremely tired - I had to force myself to take a walk on the trail.   What is up with my symptoms?

Is it because my body is not used to the Paxil? I've only been on Paxil for 4 days.

One thing for sure is I'm finally sleeping better..at least. I hope you can shed some light for me. Thank you, Jaye Howard

Answer
It is possible that you are experiencing side effects from Paxil.  It is also possible that it was symptoms from your illness or side effects from the Nyquil or a combination or all three.  If the symptoms continue once you are no longer sick and taking cold medicine I would try to take the Paxil for about 2 weeks.  If the symptoms are still troublesome after 2 weeks I would talk to your doctor and let him/her know.  Since you started 2 medications at nearly the same time which could have caused the same symptoms it is difficult to determine what caused the problem.  If the symptoms continue you will need to discuss them with your doctor.

Thanks
