Pharmacy - Tinidazole and body tics/jerks

Expert: Eric Brandt - 4/16/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

About a month ago I took a single dose of Fasigyn (Tinidazole) 2g for a Giardia infection. About three weeks ago I have been getting body jerks and night and involuntary muscle twitching during the day. Do you think it could be a result of the Tinidazole, and if so, is it likely to go away?

ANSWER: Hi Stephanie,
I do not think that what you are experiencing is related to Tinidazole. Are you taking any other medications?
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm

QUESTION: Hi Eric,

Thanks for your response, I'm not on any other medication. I am just concerned because I've heard some antibiotics can cause/bring about epilepsy and I am scared these tics/jerks will become permanant.

Answer
Hi Stephanie,
Since Tinidazole is not likely the cause of your twitching, you need to look for other causes. Have your electrolytes checked (sodium, potassium, magnesium) to rule out imbalance as a cause.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
