Pharmacy - amoxicillian and alcohol

Expert: Dr Alan Galbraith - 4/27/2009

Question
Will drinking alcohol while taking amoxicillin make me throw up or have negative effects on my health? I was just diagnosed with strep throat today (Monday) and I was hoping to drink to celebrate my birthday on Friday, but I don't know if this is a good idea. I'm prescribed to take the antibiotic for 10 days, so Friday will be the 5th day that I'm on the drug.

Answer
Dear Amber

I cannot say any more as there is no interaction between alcohol and any of the penicillins. What more detail do you want?

Regards

Alan galbraith

There is no problem whatsoever in having a drink when taking amoxycillin. Go and enjoy your birthday.
