Pharmacy - Dilantin and interactions

Expert: Eric Brandt - 5/8/2009

Question
Hi Eric,
I am 53, and recovering from laproscopic total hysterectomy. Surgery was done for uterine cancer (small contained spot) no chemo or radiation needed. Feeling great now but would like to make some changes.

I have taken 400mg dilantin for approx 38 years, no problems, no seizures.  I do have mild facial hair and would like advise regarding whether it is safe to drink SPEARMINT TEA or RED CLOVER TEA twice a day (which I have read if helpful in decreasing facial hair) with Dilantin.  I usually take my 400mg in one dose at 10:00pm before bedtime.

Would it be safe to drink either of these teas as long as it was at least 2 hours from the time I take Dilantin?  I don't drink coffee, but have over the years drank other teas, black, green, Cokes, and eaten chocolate throughout the day with no ill effects.

I would also like to take CoQ10 but want to ask first.
I am 100 lbs overweight and have been all my life.

Thanks,
Cathy

Answer
Hi Cathy,
There are no systematic studies of regular medications and interactions with herbal supplements. What we have is anecdotal reports. I have not seen any information that indicated an interaction between CoQ10 and Dilantin or spearmint or clover tea interaction with Dilantin. If you choose to take them proceed with caustion and stop the supplements at the first sign of any change that can not otherwise be explained.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
