This is somewhat controversial if you believe many of the reports appearing in recent years which by the way are mostly flawed ie the experimental design was not good and then it produces spurious results. I have discussed this with several prominent gynaecologists. The consensus is in the absence of breast cancer (or family history of)and some other contraindications, and if a woman feels confident and well on HRT, there is no valid reason why it should not be taken for as long as necessary. There are many scaremongers out there who think it is unnatural but then so is the menopause. The average age of the menopause has increased over the years due to medical advances and will continue to do so as medicine and longevity increases. The menopause appears to related to the average longevity of women which has increased dramatically over the past decades. One hundred and fifty years ago most women died before it. By the way my wife did not reach the menopause until 62 and will be on HRT as long as she wishes - eight years later she is still on it and extremely fit, healthy and sexually very active.
