Pharmacy - Lactose intolerence

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 5/5/2009

Question
QUESTION: Is lactose intolerance is common in India?

ANSWER: Hi Dharampalan,
The incidence of lactose intolerance is very high in India, both in young children and in adults. Many years back we had reviewed the incidence of lactose intolerance in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics, I would suggest you have a look at that article:
"Lactose Intolerance: Physiological, clinical and therapeutic considerations. Ind. J. Paediatr. 51 : 671-681, 1984."
Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the article, but it would be available in most libraries.

QUESTION: Dear Ravi Ghooi
I am writing this mail to confirm whether you are same Ravi Ghooi who had worked in FDC Ltd some years ago. I was a field personnel at that time and we had a close association at that time. I retired from gsk consumer healthcare in 2006

Answer
Hi Dharampalan,
Yes I did work in FDC between 1983 and 1988 as the Medcal Servces Manager.
Now that you mention it, I do recall our association. I believe we met a number of times, and were together in Biji's Ingleside Inn at Lonavala too.
After FDC I joined Unichem and was with them for six years, this was followed by about 12 years with JK Drugs and pharmaceuticals in Delhi and then as the head of ICRI in Delhi. Now I am heading Bilcare Research Academy at Pune, but I am also due to retire shortly. While the management wants me to stay on I plan to opt out in July and start my own CRO in Pune.
Whenever you are this side, you are most welcome to visit me. My address is given below:

Coming to your query about lactose intolerance(LI). A study by RK Tandon of AIIMS, Delhi showed that LI is very high in south India but mush lower in north India. I quote their results from the Amercian J. Clin Nutrition 34:943-46, 1981.

"A multicenter study was carried out in India to determine the incidence of lactose intolerance in healthy volunteers from different parts of the country. The incidence was found to be 66.6% in the subjects from two South Indian centers at Trivandrum and Pondicherry. In contrast, the incidence in the subjects from a North Indian center in New Delhi was much lower, i.e., 27.4% (p less than 0.001). The lower incidence in the North Indian subjects may perhaps be due to the fact that they are descendants of the Aryans who have been dairying for long and are known to be lactose tolerant."

Regards
Ravi Ghooi
