Pharmacy - Loestrin24

Question
Hello!
My MD has prescribed Loestrin24FE for perimenopause (very irregular periods, in particular).  I have three questions:
1. Can this medication be started at any time of the month?
2. Does this medication typically cause weight gain?
3.  I also take HCTZ (kidney stone prevention), Actenol for osteoporosis, and prescription potassium CL for taking with the HCTZ. Are there any potential drug interactions?
Thank you for providing us all with such a great service.

Answer
Hi JIll,
You have 2 options when to start taking your pills. You can start on the first day of your period. Or you can start on the Sunday after your period starts..
Weightgain is associated with oral contraceptives. Usually the weight gain is related to fluid reention. But since you are already on a diuretic this is not expected to be a problem.
There are no interactions with the other pills you listed.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
