Pharmacy - Cymbalta vs Effexor xr and Lyrica

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 6/4/2009

Question
I'm HIV for 20 yrs. been taking Cymbalta for 2 yrs. worked well with me. Now that budget cuts are arising, Medicade says for the Dr to put me on Effexer xr and Lyrica.  I read up on both drugs and i am scared.  I have CHF, 300 lbs. asthma, on 80 mg of lasex, potassium cl 20 meq, rayataz 150 mg, keletra, truvada, singular 10 mg, flovent. albuterol, servent diskus, lorazepam 1mg, enalapril maleate 15 mg, and finally loritab.
After reading the side efects of Effexor and Lyrica im really scared to use the two drugs. I was put on cymbalta for nuropathy, 2 yrs ago,  my question is, how will this affect me to stop the cymbalta and now start the Effexor xr and the lyrica???  I have 30 cymbalta left, can I wean myself off of this drug?  please help!

Answer
Hi Vickie,
Frankly the case is a bit complicated and the answer is not going to be easy. The only way we can get some clarity is to compare effexor and lyrica with cymbalta. If we do this one would not find too many differences and side effects of the effexor and lyrica are not very bad in comparison with that of cymbalta.
But my expertise isnt so exhaustive that I would be able to give advice sitting a few thousand miles away.
Your doctor is in regular touch with you and may be the best person to help you.
Even weaning off should be done under medical supervision and not by remote advice.
I therefore am not able to help much, and sincerely regret it.
None the less you have my best wishes
Ravi Ghooi
