Pharmacy - False positive morphine test

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 6/14/2009

Question
I have been on a pain management contract for about 8 months. 2 months ago my doctor took me off Morphine and put me on Methadone instead. I am also on Neurontin, Zoloft, hydrocodone, cyclobenaprine and diazapam, all prescribed by this same doctor.
Last month he asked me to take a urine test for compliance. I had no reason to fear this test, knowing I had been following his instructions to the letter. I was amazed at this months appointment when he told me I tested positive for morphine and therefore he could no longer treat me with opioids.
I did have poppy seed bagels that morning, but apparently was the only person in the world that didn't know that I could test positive from just eating poppy seeds! The nurse didn't ask me, and I didn't know to tell her. I also was still unaware of this when my doctor gave me the news that I had one month to find another doctor, or to let him continue treatment with non-narcotic pain killers.
My question now is, could the poppy seeds really have been the culprit here and also, from the list of medications, could any of the have reacted together to cause this test result?
Thanks for any information you can give.

Answer
Hi Bobbie,
You know it is difficult to get authentic information on how to pass tests and what are the causes of false positive drug tests.  have checked up man sites and they all say one thing that poppy seed containing foods can produce a false test for opioids. Poppy seeds come from the same plant as opioids do and hence there may be small amount of opioids in the seeds which have landed you in trouble. Why dont you talk to the doctor about the poppy seeds which you have consumed in th bagel?
