Pharmacy - Lexapro - Weaning

Expert: Eric Brandt - 6/5/2009

Question
I was taking 40 mg daily for the past 4 months.  It began to make me ill.  On May 4th, I began taking 30 mg daily.  On May 21st, I began taking 20 mg daily.  June 4th, I began taking 10 mg daily.  I just took my last 10 mg today. I could get another script filled but,  I really do not want to be on this drug any longer.  Is it alright for me to stop at this point? I think I'm sufficiently weaned.  I go to a health clinic and can't get an answer from my doctor until Sept.  As far as she knows, I'm still taking 40 mg.  She would not let me consider reducing my dosage until Sept.  Well, I disagree with her and I HAVE HAD ENOUGH!

Answer
Hi Mary,
If a drug is making you ill you need to report it to the prescriber that way. I do not know your personal circumstance and information to know why you were prescribed this drug. I also do not have enough medical history on you to assess if I agree with your docor or not. The point is that I am not in a position to advise you to act against your doctor's instructions.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
