About Nigel Simmons
Expertise
I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised. Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner. I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question. Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Pharmacy - Microgen 30

Expert: Nigel Simmons - 6/17/2009

Question
Hi,

My girlfriend is on the Microgen 30. She has started her last week of the packet, before her week off. Unfortunately, she missed Tuesdays pill, and now its Wednesday and more than 24 hours since she should have taken it. Should she take Tuesdays and Wednesdays? and also, does this mean that we will have to use protection for 7 days? and could that be longer as she is on her break? Should she just take Wednesdays pill, continue as normal, and we will be fine?

Best Regards,

James.

Firstly, an apology because I have not been able to send this response as quickly as I would have liked. Unfortunately Vodafone seem to be blocking posts to the AllExperts site, so I can only send when I am using a network.

The usual recommendation is to take a missed pill as soon as it is remembembered, and then continue as normal for the duration of the pack. However if more than 24 hours have passed, then the missed pill should be omitted. Using additional protection for the duration of the course is always advisable, especially if the missed pill cannot be taken.

My advice would be to use additional production of some form until the commencement of the next course of pills. The risk of problem is potentially small, but the additional protection will remove that risk.

I hope this helps.
