Pharmacy - mao inhibitor and epinephrine

Expert: Eric Brandt - 6/7/2009

Question
For twenty seven years I have been taking the mao inhibitor, nardil and on the package insert it says that one of the things that will interact with the this medicaton is epinephrine. Now, the dental school I am going to tells me that I can have the epinephrine that they give. So, I looked it up online and it is still listed as one of the things I cannot have. One site I found did say there was a moderate chance of an interaction between nardil and epinephrine. I'm afraid to have it. Can you find out what is going on? Thank you.

Answer
Hi Connie,
The combination of Epinephrine and Nardil can result in increased blood pressure. If the blood pressure and heart rate are monitored during the procedure and any problems that may arise are dealt with, the you should be ok.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
