Pharmacy - Calcium supplemments

Expert: Eric Brandt - 7/11/2009

Question
Hi Eric, I found out recently that I am lactose intolerant.  I was wondering how much calcium I need to take as a supplement as I do not have any calcium intake now.  I do not want to get osteoporosis as an adult but am thinking it it now too late, the damage may already be done as I am not and never was a milk drinker.  Now that I am 43 years old is it too late to try to reverse the damage already done from lack of calcium.

Answer
Hi Donella,
It is not too late to build up bone density. I recpmmend 1500 mg calcium per day. Take 500 mg 3 times a day. You should also take 1000 units vitamin D per day to help with the absorption of the calcium.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
