Pharmacy - L-Theanine

Expert: Barbara Judge - 7/7/2009

Question
I have Hashamoto's disease and have Hypothyroidism. I have been very anxious lately and was wondering if I could take the supplement L-Theanine during the day.  I am concerned about it's effect on the Endocrin System and wonder if it would be safe to take and if it would effect my Thyroid dosage?

Answer
It is unknown at this time if L-Theanine would have any effects on the endocrine system.  Since it is an herbal or natural substance it is not tested or studied by the FDA before marketing.  There have not been any reported drug interactions to date.  If you decide to use this it would be in your best interest to discuss this with your doctor first and make sure that you can be properly monitored.

Thanks
