Pharmacy - slowing heartrate

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 8/15/2009

Question
I need to know of a drug that will slow a person's heartrate so low it will slow a poison running through their system.

Answer
Hi Mercedes,
You cannot stop a poison from ciruclating n the blood (if that is what you mean) by slowing the heart. If the heart slows down beyond a point around 40 bts/min, blood circulation will stop and that will cause death. Additionally slowing down the heart is not done to reduce poisons from circulating in the body. Propranolol or atenolol can slow the heart, if you add verapamil, heart almost stops but how will that help?
Your question is not very clear to me, if you elaborate may be I can tell you a method to counteract the poison.
Ravi
