Pharmacy - Antibiotics questions

Expert: Dr Alan Galbraith - 9/3/2009

Question
My doctor gave me SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 because of a infected area on my leg it is a substituted for bactrim DS . I am suppose to take two pills a day for a week. Since I have taken two days and have experienced a burning sensation in my upper stomach area and I am wondering if I should quit taking it. Also in early August I had to take this same drug for 10 days and then I took amoxicillin for 7 days to clear up a spider bite. So I have taken a lot of antibiotics this past month and I am wondering if this could be causing my problem. Thanks and hope you have a great day.

Answer
Dear Allen

This antibiotic which is similar to Bactrim can on occasion cause abdominal pain not unlike what you are experiencing. I would doubt that this should make you stop taking the drug unless it becomes more severe as this pain is usually on no consequence. If you are really worried and the pain is bad speak to pour prescriber about substituting another antibiotic. I do not at all think your problem is related to your previous antibiotic use.
