Pharmacy - hair loss

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 9/29/2009

Question
I have been experiencing hair loss.  Through the years it has been thinning gradually.  Now it seems worse.  I take thyroid med and cholesterol med.  Their is no family history of hair loss.  My meds are checked regularly and my blood work is normal.  I eat pretty good..not a lot of fat or sugar.  My weight is normal.  I am 61 yrs  5'7" 130lbs.  I am active but do not exercise in a gym.  I chase a two yr old around and one day a week I take an elderly lady out with her rolling walker (a lot of lifting in both cases)  I do not have much stress.  Please help me find out why my head is balding

Answer
Hi Nancy,
From your name I guess you are a female, in case of males such hairloss is perfectly normal, and we dont really bother abut it. At the age of 61 you would be post menopausal, and in this age oestrogen is virtually absent and hence testosterone becomes dominant, many women at this age develop both hair loss and facial hair growth. My guess is that your hairloss is due to hormonal imbalance. The other reason could be that Pyridoxine deficiency has been demonstrated to cause such a loss, though this has not been confirmed worldwide. You have two alternatives, one is to start HRT, and the other is to take large doses of Pyridoxine. Let me caution you that neither of these are fool proof methods to reverse the hair loss. Hair loss is something which science has not concentrated on and consequently we know very little about it. In my opinion, you would have to approach your health care provider for HRT or pyridoxine.
Best wishes
