Pharmacy - heart attack/heartburn

Expert: Dr Alan Galbraith - 9/5/2009

Question
I had a heart attack in april 09. I also have GERD. before my heart attack I had no real problems with the gerd and took one 20mg prilosec daily. ever since my heart attack I have had SERIOUS problems with chest and back pain that comes and goes..the doctors at the ER think it is acid reflux and not another heart attack...they now have me taking 80mg of prilosec daily but it does not help. I also take plavix, zocor, enalapril, metoprolol, and imdur for the heart disease which has been diagnosed as moderate. I am male, and 44 years old and a former smoker..I quit in may 09. used to smoke 2 packs daily...any ideas? thank you in advance for your time. just scared and looking for answers!!

Answer
Dear Tony

Not much I can say here really as I would tend to agree with your doctors. However, it is important that you see a gastroenterologist for further advice and maybe even have a gastroscopy done to determine the cause of the GERD. I am surprised you have not been referred to one already.

Regards

Dr Alan Galbraith
