Pharmacy - malarone and doxycycline drug interaction

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 9/30/2009

Question
Hi,

I am on holiday in Vietnam on a motorbike trek. I am taking Malarone as an anti malaria drug.  I burnt my leg on the exhaust of the bike and have a large burn that blistered and burst, it is quite a deep burn and about 2-3 cm in diameter.  I am putting on clean bandages each day but it is taking a long time to heal.  Yesterday I felt feverish, joint pain and my leg is hurting.  I feel better today after a good night sleep.  I have a feeling that was caused by my wound.  I have been told doxycyclin contains antiboitics as well as an anti malarial drug.  I am struggling with the local pharmacies to get an antibiotic so I was wondering can I take doxycyclin for 3 days to help fight the infection as well as taking the Malarone?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Frazer,
Doxycycline may not be the best choice for the infection due to the injury that you have had. Though Doxycyline has a potential as a good antimalarial (prophylactic). I would rather suggest a simle antibiotic like cephalexin to take care of the injury and continue malarone for antimalarial prophylaxis. As such there is no interaction between malarone and doxycycline but as I said doxy would not be the best for your injury.
