Pharmacy/expiration

Question
Dr. Ghooi, I hope this is within your area of expertise. If not, perhaps you will suggest another category of expert to which I might turn.

I've just noticed that my hand sanitizers have expiration dates. The active ingredients of all these is alcohol. Does alcohol indeed lose its effectiveness after a certain time? How important is the expiration date?

Answer
Hi Richard,
Hand Sanitizers generally do not lose their effectiveness after expiry. Alcohol does not lose its efficacy (you would probably have noted that Chivas Regal (18 year old) is much more expensive and I feel better than Chivas Regal (12 year old).
Expiry dates are important for products which degrade into something toxic, for most other products they really dont matter, but they are put as a result of government regulation.
Best wishes
