As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid in that population, and disease management issues.

Topic: Pharmacy

Expert: Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
Date: 12/6/2007
Subject: 6-7 days constipation and Fleet Babylax enema

Question
Hi. I gave my 2-year-old baby Fleet Babylax enema for two consecutive days now because she has been straining and has not pooped for 6-7 days already. But even after the Babylax, she has not pooped yet. This is the first time this happened. Previous times I gave her Babylax, she pooped after only one or two minutes. Now it's been more than 8 hours since I last gave her Babylax and no poop yet (although she still strains and passes very little soft watery poop twice). Is the Babylx inside her safe? Also, I'm not sure if this is reason enough to bring her to the hospital because she seems to be very happy and eats/drinks milk normally. I also have a Fleet Enema for Children with me but I'm scared to use it on her (and I'm not sure if it's safe after the two Babylax). Thanks for your time and help.

Answer
Dear Tony,

I am sorry to hear of your daughter's constipation problems. I recommend that you take her to a doctor for a proper medical evaluation. Normally the fleets enemas will work so it is important that a Dr. look at her to make sure she does not have any intestinal blockages.

I would not use anymore enemas in the meantime.

I hope she feels better soon. Happy Holidays!

Best,
Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
