Question
Would lisinopril be an appropriate substitute for Altace for someone who is primarily concerned with lowering the risk of a second heart attack (i.e., someone with normal blood pressure and no heart failure or other complications)?  What dose of lisinopril would be equivalent to 10mg of Altace?  I am interested, because generic lisinopril is much less expensive than than Altace. Thank you for your valuable help.

Answer
Hi Herb,
Lisinopril and Altace belong to the same drug classification. Lisinopril could be an alternative to Altace although I have not seen studies to show that the benefits  ssen with Altace are a class effect. Altace offers protection that maybe the others in its class do not.
The dose conversion is not clear cut either. I would start with 10 mg lisinopril and monitor blood pressure. The dose would then be adjusted according to the response.
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
