About Nigel Simmons
Expertise
I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised. Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner. I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question. Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Experience
Registered as a UK pharmacist in 1982 and have worked in a number of hospital and health management posts around the UK. Formerly Chief Pharmacist for a 440 bed general hospital in Cambridgeshire.
Past/Present clients
Previously Sysop on CompuServe UK Professionals forum.

Pharmacy - Adderall

Expert: Nigel Simmons - 3/1/2004

Question
Hello! I am a 49 year old female who has been on Adderall 20 mgs. twice a day for over 6 years (same dosage)  Could you please tell me if there are any long term side effects from taking this drug? Thank you so very much!

Answer
Carolanne

Adderall is a product containing several amphetamine based drugs, and as such will have similar properties and risks to other amphetamines.

Clinical information can be found at:

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/pharmclips2.cgi?keyword=%20Adderall%AE%20%2020%20MG%20

If you have problems with the link, go to www.rxlist.com and then enter Adderall in the search box.

A search on the internet also produces lots of hits for Adderall, though the sites need to be seen in context and I would advise caution when a site hypes a risk while offering an alternative.

If you have particular concerns or would like to consider discontinuing use of the product, then you should discuss these with your general physician or the specialist that prescribes the treatment. I would not recommend stopping without their knowledge or support, particularly as a gradual withdrawl may be advisible.

I hope this helps.
