Pharmacy - Advair Diskus 250/50

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 9/18/2007

Question
I am a 37 yr old while female - I have been on Advair
Diskus 250/50 for about the last 5/6 years - I dont have any severe health side affect symptoms that I have
see posted in alot of web sites but I have something
that nobody else has seemed to mention and cannot find
any information about it.
Before I started using Advair - I had perfect teeth
no cavitites no nothing. After years of using Advair
I now have Tooth Enamel Loss on my bottom
front teeth - they are not decaying at all but
the lower half of each tooth has lost its tooth
enamel and shows the yellowish Dentin layer.
I use my Advair 250/50 once a day and rinse my
mouth with water as well as mouth wash and brushing
after each dose - but yet it is still destroying
my teeth.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
thank you in advance

Answer
Hi Devina,
What you experience has been noted in medical literature, and it is also a logical side effect, in that it was expected. What is happening is that small amounts of fluticasone that adhere to your gums are affecting the teeth. Probably there is some amount of fluticasone being absorbed through the gums which are affecting near by structures, ie teeth.
As a pharmacologist I can understand and explain this, what I am not sure is how to treat it. So this is what I shall do, I shall talk to one of my friends who is an orthodontist, and get back to you. This should not take more than 48 hours but since my friend is based in a different city and I am sure whether she is in or not it may take slightly longer. I would greatly apreciate if you send me an e mail on my personal id so that I have access to you and can send you the information.
