About Nigel Simmons
Expertise
I am happy to answer general questions on medicines and hospital care. If possible, please use approved / chemical names rather than brands which are not internationally recognised. Like all health professionals I am bound by a duty of care which prevents me giving detailed information about medication or treatment of people other than the questioner. I will endeavour to help wherever possible or point towards more appropriate advice. If however your question crosses too far into patient confidentiality, I hope you will understand why I cannot answer your question. Consider.. would you want me to discuss your care with a friend or relative without your knowledge?

Experience
Registered as a UK pharmacist in 1982 and have worked in a number of hospital and health management posts around the UK. Formerly Chief Pharmacist for a 440 bed general hospital in Cambridgeshire.
Past/Present clients
Previously Sysop on CompuServe UK Professionals forum.

Pharmacy - African Parasites and breastfeeding

Expert: Nigel Simmons - 6/29/2007

Question
My wife and I just returned from 7 months in Burkina Faso, West Africa.  We both have constant stomach pains, diarrhea, and gas.  I took Zentel (aka albendazole) and feel somewhat better.  My wife is breastfeeding our 11-month old.  Can she take this against probable parasites?  If not, is there something else?  Is there something that can be given to the infant?

Answer
James

I think you need much more specialist advice than I can give, especially as there is a young child involved.

Can I suggest you contact a specialist in tropical diseases (your local hospital pharmacy should be able to point you in the right direction.

Alternatively, if you get stuck you could try contacting the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London (www.thehtd.org). They may not be prepared to speak to you directly, but will probably speak to your family doctor.

I hope this helps.
