About Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
Expertise
I can answer a broad range of questions related to community pharmacy practice. My particular interests include childrens` health and safe medication use for seniors. As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid in that population, and disease management issues.

I entered the world of pharmacy as a technician for approximately six years. I then went on to receive my Doctor of Pharmacy degree and now work for the Federal Government as an outpatient pharmacist.

Topic: Pharmacy

Expert: Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
Date: 6/3/2007
Subject: Amox-clav or doxycycline

Question
I have a terrible sinus infection and no health insurance.  I have partial prescriptions left over of Amoxicillin ;4 days worth ( started taking on on Thursday and will finish on Sunday) 7 Amox-clav 500 mg tablets and doxycycline 100 mg.  Am I correct in thinking that the Amox-clav is almost the same thing as the amoxicillin?  When I finish the 4th day of Amoxicillin,  would I finish the amox-clav?  Or would the doxycycline be better.  After 4 days of antibiotics  I am worse not  better.  I already know that your advice will be to seek professional medical treatment but that is not an option at this time.  I wish it were.  I also have Ciprofloxacin 500 mg Taran but I have never taken it before and do not know what it is for..

Since a doctors visit is out of the question,  I would really appreciate your advice on which antibiotic would help.

Thank you,
Kristi

Answer
Dear Kristi,

I empathize with your situation. I remember when I struggled withe the same issues as a "poor" college student struggling to keep my electricity on.

Since seeing a Dr. is out of the question, you could finish with the Augmentin , which is like amoxicillin but stronger and provides better treatment against resistant strains of bacteria.

As for the doxycyline and cipro (both are antibiotics), do not get those involved. If you are still suffering after finishing the augmentin, you will most likely need something stronger.

I wish you the best. Take care and good luck.

Regards,

Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
