Pharmacy - Amoxicillian

Question
Barbara,

Thank you for your time.  My mother who weighs about 130 pounds was prescribed about 700mg of amoxicilian (sorry about the spelling)for 2 weeks for a sinus infection.  This seems like a lot.  Is this a proper amount for her?  Thank you.

Answer
The dosage ranges for amoxicillin vary greatly due to what bacteria is suspected of having caused the infection that is being treated.  Amoxicillin can be dosed from 20 to 50mg/kg per day.  This would translate to 750mg to 1500mg per day usually in 3 doses.  How often your mother took this 700mg dose will determine the appropriateness of the dose.  If you have further questions I would recommend contacting the doctor who prescribed the medication.

Thanks

Barb Judge
