Question I am exclusively breastfeeding my 12 week old daughter. She has reflux and is being treated with 2.5mls of Zantac twice daily. I have been suffering possible PND and was advised by GP 2 stop breastfeeding if wishing 2 take antidepressants. I have read that Zoloft is safe while breastfeeding. Is there a possible reaction with the Zantac and Zoloft?
Answer Hi Natalie,
I would consult your baby's pediatrician's office for the safest antidepressant to use when breastfeeding. Zoloft, as you know, is often the preferred SSRI to use in breastfeeding mothers and, since the percentage of drug transferred in breastmilk is minimal, there should be no cause for any drug interactions with her zantac.
What is important right now is for you to receive the proper treament. I too suffered from PPD and know how hard it is. A great site to check out is www.postpartumdepressionhelp.com. This is the website founded by a good acquaintance of mine, Dr. Shoshana Bennett, author of Postpartume Depression for Dummies.
I wish you lots of luck and happiness in the years to come. Happy holidays and please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help...
