Question My 17 month old son has been taking Augmentin for an ear infection for the past week. His behavior has noticeably changed - hyperactive, agitated, anxious - he has been throwing tantrums more so than ever before. Can these behaviors been attributed to the medicine and if so, are there long-term concerns I need to be worried about? Should I stop giving him the medicine?
Answer Hi Tara,
It is such a rarity to meet another Tara!
With regards to your question, it sounds like your son's behavior is probably due to the Augmentin. Although it is rare, anxiety, behavioral changes, and hyperactivity have been reported as possible side effects of Augmentin. I would not worry about any long term effects. All of the behaviors mentioned should go away after stopping the medicine although he is entering the terrible two's soon after which time all may reoccur without notice!
I would call his doctor first thing in the morning and tell him or her your concerns. They will most likely change his antibiotic to another type. If you have not yet given his dose for tonight, I would probably skip it until you talk to his doctor tomorrow.
