About Dr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D.
Expertise
I can answer a broad range of questions related to community pharmacy practice. My particular interests include childrens` health and safe medication use for seniors. As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid in that population, and disease management issues.

I entered the world of pharmacy as a technician for approximately six years. I then went on to receive my Doctor of Pharmacy degree and now work for the Federal Government as an outpatient pharmacist.

Question

I have a question I hope you can answer. I use Combivent (ipratropium bromide and albuterol sulfate) for a lung condition. I do not need the medicine all the time, just when I am having issues. My problem is I do not have insurance and the product expires sometimes before I can us it all. My question is- How long is it safe to take after the expiration date and what are the hazards of doing this? Is the medicine just less affective or is it dangerous- Thank You very much in advance for your answer

Answer
Dear Steve,

I understand your dilemma. The "pharmaceutically correct" answer is to discard all expired drug products, period.

My real world answer is, if you have to choose to either go with no medicine at all or to use some that is a few months past the expiration, then I would choose to use the expired med.

Now, although the Combivent should not hurt you, it may not help you as much once you reach a few months past the expiration date but it is probably better than nothing at all.

In conclusion, I would try to find out if there are any prescription reimbursements or coupons offered by the manufacturer of Combivent. You can find out their contact info. by visiting their website at:

I wish you the best of luck! Take care.
