Pharmacy - Effexor and Alli

Expert: Eric Brandt - 7/10/2007

Question
I have been taking Effexor(75 mg) for nearly a year.  I have recently started a diet and have begun taking the new diet pill Alli.  Is there any interaction between the two? Is it safe to take this while on an SSRI? I have not felt well since I have started the pills, so I was curious. Thank you for any advice you may lend.

Answer
Hi Lauren,
Alli contains the active ingredient orlistat. It works by interfering with the absorption of fats from the diet. By doing so it also interferes with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and Vitamin E. You should eat a wholesome diet and supplement with a multivitamin containing fat soluble vitamins while taking this medication.
Alli does not interact with Effexor or other SSRI's.
Can you describe how you feel?
Thank you for using Allexperts
Sincerely,
Eric Brandt, B.Sc. Pharm
