Pharmacy - Extreme infant teething and longterm effects of ibuprofen

Expert: Rickey Mallory - 3/19/2004

Question
Hi,

I was originally looking just for information on the longterm effects of ibuprofen on an infant, but with your expertise in herbal and homeopathic remedies, I would like to dig a little deeper.

My 17 month little girl can take a tumble on pavement and be up and happy in moments, but seems to have an incredibly sensitive mouth in respects to teething.  Unfortunately, she also happens to be an extremely slow teether.  (She has been working on getting her first molar in for three months now - confirmed by the pediatrician - and only the ridges are through).

When her front top and bottom teeth came in, I was able to use ice and Hylands teething tablets on all but a few days when I gave her ibuprofen.  But, the various homeopathic teething remedies don't seem to even touch her pain with her molars, and I have tried other brands, including Boiron and Natura-Bio.  Frozen bagels and washcloths don't work either.

The pain puts her into a full-on dangerous temper tantrum.  Advil is the only thing that seems to help, but I am worried about the longterm effects on her stomach and liver.  I use the dose recommended for her weight be the pediatrician, and try to never give her more than two doses in a day, although I have occasionally given her three.  I estimate that she has averaged 2 doses a day, five days a week (some days the pain is just not there!?!?)for three months.

Am I just creating a longterm liver or stomache problem?  Any other ideas or advice?

Thanks,

Catherine

Answer
Generally, long-term refers to a course of treatment over years, not week or months.  Your best bet is to go by your physician's advice.

I can't offer anything that will work in children without knowing the specifics of your child.  Your doctor can answer that question.

You are probably familiar with the usual over the counter teething remedies.

This is general information and not intended to take the place of your trusted physician's advice.
