AboutDr. Tara Kompare, Pharm.D. Expertise I can answer a broad range of questions related to community pharmacy practice. My particular
interests include childrens` health and safe medication use for seniors. As the mother of two small children, I am quite knowledgable on many parenting issues from how to handle
a baby with colic to how to get kids to take their medicine. With regards to medication use in seniors, I can answer questions about adverse effects, drugs to generally avoid
in that population, and disease management issues.
Experience I entered the world of pharmacy as a technician for approximately six years. I then went on to receive my Doctor of Pharmacy degree and now work for the Federal Government as an outpatient pharmacist.

Question Hello, I am a 57 yr. old ostomate and currently taking Triamterene HCTZ
75/50 for my high blood pressure. I am concerned that this might not be
appropriate since it stops the body from absorbing too much sodium. As an
ostomate, I am told that I need to have sodium since my body no longer
retains it in the same way. Is there some other medication that seems more
appropriate?
Thank you, Roberta
Answer Hi Roberta,
You pose an excellent question. With the proper monitoring of you sodium levels, I do not believe you should have any significant issues. Obviously try to keep track of your sodium intake and your doctor should adjust your meds accordingly.
If you do find your body's sodium levels drop too low, then, yes, there are a lot of alternatives to try and only your doctor can decide which is best for you based on your history, etc.
