Pharmacy - Interactions - Synthroid,Effexor and Dextroamphetamine

Expert: Dr. Ravindra Bhaskar Ghooi - 5/17/2007

Question
I have been taking 60 milligrams Dextroamphetamine sulfate since about 1992, for ADHD, please note, it has helped tremendously in all aspects of my life. Over the years since that time, I have been prescribed 150 mg. of Effexor, 20 mg of Zocar and 75 milligrams
of Synthroid each day.
While I feel fine on this combination of drugs, I wonder if I will ever be able to get off of the Dextroamphetamine sulfate? I have tried other medications for ADHD and they are just not effective. Also could the Dextroamphetamine sulfate played a part in my thyroid condition? I thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi Camelia,
That is a difficult question. Whether you will be able to get off DXT is easy to answer, yes you can. But then will your symptoms be controlled, I cant say. May be you wll have to be on DXT for a very long time. But I fail to see why does that bother you. Being dependent on medicine for your well being is not addiction, and a diabetic too depends upon insulin, that is not a negative thing per se.
I am unable to answer with certainity if DXT is responsible for the thyroid condition. There are very few reports which suggest that such an interactions. It becomes very difficult if such AEs are related to the drug or not.
